"Human society sustains itself by transforming nature into garbage."

BY MASON COOLEY

I think we all agree that one of the main sources for the garbage that’s on the streets right now is people. People who buy stuff from the shops and after using them, they throw what they don’t need or  what they cannot use, wherever they feel like on the streets, in the sewerage system basically anywhere but in the garbage bin where they should throw it. I am sure you have seen people doing that.

Sometimes I wonder if these people that throw things (garbage) wherever they feel like, do that in their apartment or their house as well. I mean, after eating do they throw the leftover food on the floor? Do they throw it on the sofa? After using a tissue, do they throw it anywhere else but in the garbage bin where it belongs…? And the list can continue with cigarettes buds, plastic bottles, plastic bags etc…Do these people throw garbage everywhere in their house or apartment too? (Makes you think they do that, doesn’t it?). I am also interested to know… how do YOU FEEL when you see people throwing things (garbage) on the street...

The 2nd important source of garbage is “sidewalk restaurants” how I like to call them; you know them, they do their business on the “trotoar”. What I’ve noticed and probably you have noticed this too, a lot of tissues, plastic cups, plastic bags, cigarette buds etc., basically a lot of garbage in their proximity, right?! Not to mention that most of these “sidewalk restaurants” dump their garbage and dirty water in the sewerage system and this causes a lot of other problems. I also have to say that some of these “sidewalk restaurants” do try to maintain a certain level of cleanliness, but useless nonetheless because either the wind or the current generated by the passing vehicles, disperses the garbage everywhere…

Of course that I understand the peoples need to make money in order to survive, but I wonder what stops them from doing it in a civilized way as well? What stops them from storing all of their garbage in big plastic bags or garbage bins that can be collected and taken to the local dump area where they belong? Think about it…not only that this will help these “sidewalk restaurants” to maintain a cleaner environment in their business area but it could also be a good way for them to attract more clients. I am not going to discuss about the legality of their business because that’s the government’s job.

The 3rd source of garbage is “sidewalk shops”; they sell all kinds of products, from cigarettes to electronic pulsa and so on so forth. And near these shops you also see a lot of trash. I wonder why the owners of these shops don’t consider buying a garbage bin, that would make life so much easier and their business area so much cleaner. Also, after sweeping the streets, instead of making a big pile out of the garbage they could just dump it in the garbage bin, preventing it this way from being dispersed everywhere on the streets as well as, preventing us from seeing it, not to mention preventing us from smelling the damn thing! Is it really that hard to do that, to buy a Garbage bin and from time to time to sweep as well?

A change is needed and is needed fast. Us giving up and ignoring it, does not help, only makes things worse.

If you can think of any other sources of garbage, please let me know via your comments. Thank you.
